The NSA is Totally Out of Control

According to reports, President Obama did not know that the NSA was secretly listening in on the phone conversations of friendly world leaders, such as Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany.   The NSA apparently says that it has so many spying operations going on at once that it would be impractical to brief the Administration on all of them.   Of course, something as potentially explosive as monitoring the cell phones of the heads of state of major allies would seem to be at the top of the list of important things to mention to the President.   I believe that the NSA, the CIA, and other security agencies have gotten completely out of control and need to be reined in by the Congress and the Administration.   If the President didn't make this decision to spy on our allies and Congress didn't make this decision to spy on our allies, then who did.   Some self-important, faceless bureaucrat did, that's who.   These security bureaucrats have way too much power and discretion to commit our country to actions in and against other countries.   The Administration and the Congress need to get a firm handle on these people forthwith.    We are making more problems in the world than we are solving with all of our spying/military/security efforts.   I think a lot of these government types have been watching too much television and too many movies.   The attitude seems to be that anything goes in the name of national security and national security is in the eye of the beholder.   There is no military or security threat on the horizon that possibly justifies all of this apparatus.   If we need to rein in the federal budget, the intelligence/security agencies would be a fine place to start.
